WikiLeaks: Julian Assange 'happy' after extradition hearing - Democratic Underground: "Julian Assange today expressed his satisfaction after a procedural hearing on his extradition to Sweden and vowed that WikiLeaks would continue its work.

After the hearing at Belmarsh magistrates court, Assange said he was 'happy about today's outcome' and said the skeleton argument he and his legal team hastily produced over Christmas will be made publicly available later.

This outlines 'some important issues which will be gone into in detail on 6 and 7 February', he said.

'I would also like to say that our work with WikiLeaks continues unabated and we are stepping up our publishing for matters relating to 'cablegate' and other materials. This will shortly be occurring through our newspaper partners around the world, big and small newspapers and some human rights organisations.'"

That's thanks to a recent decision by the state's highest court, which declared on Monday that any and all expectations of privacy are lost once a defendant is in state custody.

By a vote of 5-2, the court said police may 'rummage at leisure through the wealth of personal and business information that can be carried on a mobile phone or handheld computer,' according to the dissenting opinion of Justice Kathryn Mickle Werdegar.

Werdegar was joined by Justice Carlos Moreno in opposing the decision."

Their concern is that further advances could create profound social disruptions and even have dangerous consequences.' The money quote: 'Something new has taken place in the past five to eight years,' Dr. Horvitz said. 'Technologists are replacing religion, and their ideas are resonating in some ways with the same idea of the Rapture.'"

Last week Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood floated the idea of a mileage tax. “The idea — which involves tracking drivers through Global Positioning System (GPS) units in their cars — is gaining support in some states as a way of making up for a shortfall in highway funding,” reports CNN. CFR member and current DHS boss Janet Napolitano rolled out the idea of “enhanced driver’s licenses,” that is to say RFID national ID cards. It didn’t take long for Obama to reject the idea — at least for now.
